Right.

I recall that post 9-11 Israel was concerned the US might reduce its unflagging support, when we recognized we had alienated and angered millions of people in the Arab world, but of course that cause/effect did not happen.

9-11 of course was a massive tragedy, which must remain front and center. And you have suggested we also learn from it. And my side-note is this was one of the most brilliant military operations in history, right up there with the Trojan Horse. They had no guns, and yet inflicted massive damage to the most powerful country the world has ever seen. And our continuing response continues to cause us even more damage, economically, politically, and socially, while questionably increasing our security.

I wonder how history books 50 years from now will describe this turn of events. One thought of mine is that in an interconnected world, no one is secure unless everyone is, and providing that is less expensive and works better than the old-world military model. Sort of like preparing buildings and infrastructure for a hurricane sounds costly so we don't want to do it, but is vastly cheaper than rebuilding a wrecked city after one.
